Pema Chodron was born Deidre Blomfield-Brown in 1936 in New York City. She began studying with Lama Chime Rinpoche during frequent trips to London and with Trungpa Tinpoche in San Francisco. She became a novice Buddhist nun in 1974 and became fully ordained in 1981. She was the first American in the Vajrayana tradition to become a fully ordained nun. She has written several books and teaches at the traditional "Yarne" retreat at Gampo Abbey each winter and the "Guide to teh Bodhisattva's Way of Life" at Berkeley every summer.
