From the archives of randomly cut sections from my book, Elemental Witchcraft, I offer you these two wisdom-nuggets during this Samhain tide. Trick or treat! “Shedding the self for Self,” and “Occult Tools for a Cooperator Culture.” May they prove meaningful to you.
Shedding the self for Self
The strength of a Modern Witchcraft ritual practice is that it creates regular reminders about the nuance and poetry of nature, and our balance within it. The structure we call the Wheel of the Year guides our Great Work of Magick process in constant, spiraling birth into greater awareness of your sacred self.
On another octave of that Wheel of the Year poetry we enact through our rituals, we can grow and explore larger facets of our spiritual Self – with a capitol S. At Samhain, we explore the death and release of some part of our little ego-selves, in hopes that we emerge anew with greater insight into our Self-hood. All religious attempts to describe this mystery is a metaphor. Just choose your favorite metaphor then live as an act of veneration for the Divinity you know right now.
Hopefully, with every turning of the Wheel, and all the rituals enacted throughout, we further expand the scope of our awareness of Divinity and our place within this sacredness. We evolve into deeper, broader, and more intimate relationships with Divinity, within and without.
Occult tools for a Cooperator Culture
Never forget that in the occult, the obvious answer isn’t always the true mystery. Occult literally means “hidden.” It remains a constant of Wiccan thealogy that all things originate from the timeless ground of being that is our great mother goddess.
In the Charge she says, “I am the Soul of nature, who gives life to the universe; from me all things proceed, and unto me must all things return…” and “For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.”
Cosmic Creation, and our individual magick of creation, will both begin and end with a receptive, feminine mystery. These are the tools of a cooperator culture that will build a better world.
