The Democratic Party, Šāḇar, and Israeli Peace Talks

The Democratic Party, Šāḇar, and Israeli Peace Talks July 13, 2024

This week the chaos in the Democratic Party has only escalated as the party has become further divided. There are still calls by many for Pres. Biden to drop out of the presidential race. Even though there is no one else in the party who has defeated the former Republican presidential candidate.

Still, leading Democrats and even A-list Hollywood actors have lost faith in the president. It is easy to throw stones, but we all live in glass houses. Regardless of age, we all make mistakes.

  • Confuse people
  • Forget names
  • Get lost
  • Mistake dates and numbers

Regardless of our political affiliation, we all make mistakes (Romans 3:23-24.) But not all of us are comfortable with breaking the law. The Republican Party is just as divided and broken as the Democratic Party.

The divide between traditional Republicans and radical Maga supporters has never been wider. The party is at a crossroads between conservatism and extremism. Just days before the Republican convention, the Republican candidate still doesn’t have total support from conservative politicians.

Mr. Trump’s convictions and beliefs aren’t conservative and reveal he is just as broken as the world we live in and Republicans claim to fight against.

What is Broken?

Broken is defined as, “Damaged, not working properly; interrupted.“ It is a basic understanding in Christianity that the world is broken because of the sin of mankind (Genesis 3:1-24.) Paradise was lost in the garden due to one man’s thirst for greatness and more (Genesis 3:6-7.)

Broken World

Even lost people can see and feel that this world is broken All of creation is longing to be redeemed and restored to correct fellowship with God (Romans 8:22-24.) But the creation cannot restore or repair what it broke itself, only God can (2 Chronicles 7:14, Psalm 47:3, Isaiah 65:17, Romans 8:21.)

The Apostle Paul reminded the early church of basic Jewish teaching that we live in a broken world (Genesis 19:1-38, Psalm 73:1-28.)

Šāḇar

The ancient world was morally corrupt and viciously evil to the point where God regretted making humans (Genesis 6:1-8.) God planned to call Israel out from the world as His holy people (Exodus 19:5-6, Deuteronomy 7; 6.)

The Hebrew word in the Old Testament for broken is šāḇar and it can also mean, “Crush, wreck, hurt or give birth,” depending on the context it is used in. Judaism attempts to repair the world through Tikkun Olam, a process or steps to repair the world and the broken humanity.

  1. Prayer
  2. Studying Scripture
  3. Social justice
  4. Organizational repair

Not much has changed since the Exodus, God’s people still expect a political Messiah to save the world and make them great. Jesus didn’t meet God’s people’s expectations. He wasn’t the great military leader they wanted.

Jesus disagreed with the religious leaders of His day (Matthew 23:1-39.) Jesus was more concerned about saving the world than making a great nation or judging others.

Israel wanted to be a great nation and have great power that is why they rejected their humble King. Jesus was focused on being a great God to save the world (John 3:16-18.)

Israeli Cease-Fire

As I write this Israel is working on another cease-fire in the Middle East conflict. At the same time, the IDF has bombed Palestinians in the safe zone. In many Israelis continue to protest against Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Once again God’s people want a broken man to save them and bring peace to the region. God’s people cannot follow the broken ways of the world to achieve what they want.

  • Deception
  • Greed
  • Pride
  • Violence

We need to once again remember we serve a God of peace, not revenge (Psalm 29:11, Isaiah 32:17, John 16:33, Romans 5:1.) We live in a broken world full of broken people who cannot rescue themselves, much less the world.  This world is broken because of one man’s sin (Romans 5:12.) It cannot be repaired by broken people, only by a God Who isn’t šāḇar!
