Chango is one of the most popular and also controversial Orisha in the pantheon of La Regla Lucumi, more commonly known as Santeria. He is honored on December 4th the feast day for Santa Barbara in the Catholic church. Chango represents the ashe, or sacred energy, of fire. He is the roar of the thunder, the beat of the drum. He is passion, and raw power. One of his favorite tools is his sacred axe which double sided. He can just as swiftly deliver justice, as help you avoid it. He is both a warrior and a king, and there are numerous sacred stories telling of his greatness.
In Nigeria he is worshiped as Sango at a festival which takes place each year. The event draws devotees from all over the world, and the event is spectacular, just like Sango himself. My own house has held several Chango feasts over the years. Many were wild and wonderful and the drums were loud and proud. We dined on King Chango Cashew Chili, you can find the recipe here. We left offerings and said many prayers. Here is a list of offerings should you choose to honor him in this way.
