5 Ways to to Keep Your Heart Spiritually Healthy

The human heart weighs less than two sticks of butter. It beats 100,000 times a day and over 2.5 billion times in an average lifetime.

This is not just a fantastic muscle; it is the ‘heart’ of human life. Without it, your body would quickly stop working. Keeping it healthy is essential.

The heart is a metaphor for inner life. Jesus spoke a great deal about the heart. He spoke to Samuel, “For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7 ESV).

According to Scripture, even more important than having a healthy physical heart is the condition of the spiritual heart.

How can we stay spiritually healthy?

Guard Your Heart

Lust is a desirable being waiting to catch your attention. Alluring and so inviting. He or She will capture you in their dangerous web. Be careful. Jesus said, and I’m paraphrasing here for emphasis “I say to you that everyone who looks at another with lustful intent has already committed adultery with them in their heart (Matthew 5:28 ESV).” Unfaithfulness starts in the heart.

Love Jesus with Your Whole Heart

If we were to summarize all of Jesus’ teachings throughout the Bible in one word, we would use the word love. When Jesus was asked which of the commandments was the most important, he responded, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Mark 12:30-31 ESV)”

Focus on Your Heart

I confess I’ve let Pride be my best friend far too often. She puffs me up keeping my eyes on titles, status, and positions instead of on Jesus. Jesus criticized the leaders of His day because of Pride. Their hearts were not right. They were certainly more concerned with outward appearances than their own hearts.

Give with Your Whole Heart

The size of your wallet or bank account is not important. Jesus is more concerned with the size of your heart. No matter who you are or what you do for a living you can give. Don’t allow Greed and Selfishness to lead you. Jesus looks for generous and sacrificial hearts. What we give and how we give reflects our hearts.

Keep Your Heart Holy

Holiness is not a matter of outward appearance it is a matter of the heart. Teachers of God’s law emphasized obeying God’s law as a way to be holy and not an act of heartfelt obedience towards God. So, God made a way for us so that we would no longer have to follow a bunch of rules. He sent Jesus, His only son, to be the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.

Your inner life is important to Jesus. So important He gave His life for yours. Protect your heart. Keep your eyes on Jesus.
