In November of 2016, I put pen to paper and crafted the Power Sigil to protect and empower everyone who needs it. It quickly spread and went into use across the globe.
As I look over the wide variety of shared magic sigils that I’ve helped to bring into being over the years, I always come back to this one. It’s still incredibly potent and effective – and hard to commandeer unlike some other sigils that have been used for magical resistance. I think largely because it starts with the vulnerable self and works its way out to remove barriers and aid in recognition of the other.
So I figured now’s a very good time to remind folks of this handy tool.
The Original Power Sigil:

Summary: The Power Sigil is for all those who need protection and guidance, to summon its power and remind us of our own. It is a beacon to get us to time of the Star, navigating safely through the Tower Times. The Power Sigil as it protects, also thwarts misinformation and lack of empathy.
Date and location of creation: Created by the author on November 9th, 2016 in Seattle, WA.
What elements went into the sigil:
- Protection for those in crisis or need
- Combination of the elements that make us all up: earth, air, fire, water, and spirit.
- Recognition of the Other
- Balance and equality
- Revelation of the seed of truth, directing it outward to find purchase
- Calm within the storm
- Recognize personal power
- Honoring the body
- Foster hope
- Facing and banishing fears
- Stimulate action that creates and supports change
Suggestions for use: You can make into a talisman, tattoo it on your body, trace it during meditation, place it on a candle, wear it on clothing – whatever helps you activate it.
Other Variations
In 2017, I made a variation on the design to incorporate the Philly Pride flag. More recently, I did an updated design that incorporate the inclusive design that incorporates the trans rights colors:
Folks asked for this on gear, so it’s available via my threadless shop with proceeds benefiting the Trevor Project.
Which Way Should It Face?
You may notice that on the cover of “Sigil Witchery”, the sigil appears inverted. Technically this is my preferred variation of the design, as the descending star focuses on rooting the power in the individually and at a local level. But I also recognize that folks may not feel safe with having a giant inverted star on them, depending on where they live and who they’re around.
The ascending star (as featured above) directs the energy up and outward, becoming both a protective shield and a beacon of inspiration for a larger scale.
Technically both stars are present in both orientations, so you’re not missing out if you choose one over the other. So both work, with just a slightly different energetic focus.
How Should I Draw the Power Sigil?
Most of my sigil designs can be drawn in whatever way makes you feel comfortable and familiar with it. For this one, I suggest drawing the larger star first, then the inner star. Next the arrows, dots, and crescent moons. Lastly, the circle in the center. Really, what’s most important is not how you draw it, but focusing on what/who/where needs protection and how they can flourish moving forward.
