Here was, to me, the most astonishing quote in the news last week, a staggering admission — a boast actually — of moral imbecility. From a Washington Post item on the resignation of Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter:

The loathesome Wendy Long is proud to be against empathy, apparently. Idiot.
And now it seems some of her fellow right-wingers have decided to make this a talking point. They've decided that they can score political points somehow by standing firmly against empathy, which is just … words fail.
"Empathy," says Wendy Long, scornfully spitting out the word like an epithet. "What does that mean?" I wonder if it's possible to answer that question in a way she could ever understand.
