Compassion Overcomes Self-Absorption by Robert Ricciardelli

Empathy is the powerful and rare ability to imagine what motivates someone else to act. It is lending emotion towards someone else’s experience. Self-absorption kills empathy, let alone compassion. When we focus on ourselves, our world gets smaller as our problems become larger. But when we focus on others, our world expands, and our own problems seem smaller as we increase our capacity for connection or compassionate action. The most beautiful people I know are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, and a deep loving concern for others. Beautiful people do not just happen.
