A Story of Child-like Faith

The little boy comes home from his Sunday school class and he’s all excited. He can barely get the words out.

“Momma!” he yells. “I met Jesus today! And Momma, you know what? He loves me. Jesus loves ME! And he loves you, too. Momma. He loves ALL the people everywhere.”

“How do you know that?” his mother asks.

“‘Cause they told me. They told me the Bible says so. And we sang a song about it. You want me to sing it to you? Can I sing it?

“Okay, you sing it, son.”

“JESUS LOVES ME THIS I KNOW

FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO.

LITTLE ONES TO HIM BELONG,

THEY ARE WEAK BUT HE IS STRONG.

YES, JESUS LOVES ME, YES, JESUS LOVES ME, YES JESUS LOVES ME,

THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO…”

The little boy is horrified when his mom starts to cry. “Momma, did I do something wrong?” And she cries all the more. “What’s wrong, Momma?

“It’s just I’d forgotten.”

“Forgotten what?”

“I forgot it’s that simple. I’d forgotten Jesus loves. That He loves me and you and all the people of the world. You are so right, Jesus loves.”

“But why does that make you sad, Momma?”

“Because I began believing I had to be someone I was never created to be and look good to everyone around me to prove to them I was worth loving. I began to believe I had to prove it to Jesus, too.”

“Momma, you don’t have to do any of that. I know ’cause I met Jesus today. He said to just believe what he says and I did. Why is that so hard for grownups to do?”

“You’re little now,” his mother tells him. “But one day you’ll discover that it always starts that way-believing what Jesus says is true. Then people start showing you why it’s not really true. They say Jesus can’t love you if — oh, you don’t need to hear this now.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Son, you just keep believing what you believe because when you get older and wiser, when you get all grown up, you’ll discover he can’t really love “all.” In fact, he just might not be able to love you after you’ve experienced life long enough.”

The little boy started to cry. “I don’t want to know what you know ’cause I believe Jesus loves me and that’s all I want to know. Momma, listen to what I believed today.

JESUS LOVES ME THIS I KNOW

FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO.

LITTLE ONES TO HIM BELONG,

THEY ARE WEAK BUT HE IS STRONG.

YES, JESUS LOVES ME, YES, JESUS LOVES ME, YES JESUS LOVES ME,

THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO…”
