Fringe Event III: The Return of Spock William Bell and Hurley Jorge Garcia (Dude!)

I’ve only just gotten caught up on some of last week’s sci-fi. In a stunning turn of events, Fringe last week started fantastically (with a guest appearance by Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley on LOST) and ended weakly, with the katra soul of Spock William Bell taking over Olivia Dunham’s body and making her do a merely OK impression of Leonard Nimoy.

Presumably the writers felt like they had to come up with a real challenge for Anna Torv, since she did such a spectacular job of playing Olivia, Fauxlivia, and Fauxlivia pretending to be Olivia, and Olivia made to believe she was Fauxlivia, and then Olivia pretending to be Fauxlivia once she realized that she wasn’t. Channelling Spock is difficult – just ask Dr. McCoy.

I Am Not Spock (Reissue)I hope that the writers/producers, who like planting easter eggs and interesting background props, put a copy of I Am Not Spock (and/or I Am Spock) on a bookshelf somewhere – perhaps with Walter listening to some groovy music by Leonard Nimoy in the background?

By way of contrast, The Event returned with two hours’ worth of episodes and was surprisingly good. It was almost like I was starting to care what happened to some of the characters – even Director of National Intelligence Blake Sterling, who is turning out to be a more likeable character than the one he played on Heroes (which of course isn’t difficult).

For those who may not watch it, let me say that even at its weakest moments, Fringe remains a genuinely impressive TV show. And having tricked some of us into thinking it had been cancelled, The Event has made a promising come back. And let’s face it, pitting a black president against a female politician from Alaska is a recipe with a fair amount of potential, as long as you also have aliens in the mix.

I’ve heard of but not watched a few other shows that have started recently. Any good ones?
