After 43 years in Christian music, NewSong remains committed to its core mission of ministry, with a modern twist on its latest album “Church People.”

Lead singer Russ Lee says the band’s longevity stems from a consistent desire to connect with audiences through authentic music that reflects contemporary sounds while maintaining theological depth.
“We want to write songs that we would like to listen to,” Lee said. The band’s recent collaboration with Grammy Award-winning producers like Ted T has helped them evolve sonically while preserving their foundational message.
Influenced by current artists like Morgan Wallen and Kane Brown, NewSong has crafted an album that bridges generational musical styles. Lee describes the process as organic, noting the album’s creation “didn’t feel like work” and emerged naturally through collaborative songwriting.
The title track “Church People” represents more than just a celebration of congregational life. Lee emphasizes it’s a call for Christians to embody love and service beyond church walls.
“If there’s ever been a day for Christians to go and love like Jesus, this is it,” Lee said. He referenced early church historians who noted Christians’ distinctive characteristic of caring not just for their own community, but for everyone around them.
The band continues to maintain an active touring schedule, performing approximately 80 concerts annually. Winter Jam, a major Christian music tour, has been instrumental in helping NewSong stay relevant and connect with younger audiences.
Lee credits these touring experiences, particularly with younger artists such as CAIN and for KING+COUNTRY, for keeping the band’s sound current. Working with contemporary producers and writers has allowed NewSong to create music that feels fresh while maintaining its core spiritual message.
“Sonically, we want to be as broad as possible,” Lee explained. “Theologically, we want to be as robust as we can be.”
The album arrives during a complex cultural moment, which Lee sees as an opportunity for meaningful spiritual engagement. He believes the current cultural landscape, despite its challenges, provides a unique platform for authentic Christian expression.
“One of the upsides of a pluralistic society is that anything with a strong, defendable argument can have a moment,” Lee said.
NewSong’s approach remains consistent with its decades-long ministry: creating music that ministers to people while remaining culturally aware and musically innovative.
The band’s commitment to its original mission hasn’t wavered, even as musical styles have transformed. Lee describes their current work as an evolution, not a departure, from their original vision.
“We have been in ministry for 43 years,” Lee said. “To continue to enjoy what you do and have an effect, to share the gospel — it’s a humbling and wonderful experience.”
“Church People” represents another chapter in NewSong’s ongoing musical journey, blending contemporary sounds with timeless spiritual messages.
The album has already received positive feedback, with Lee noting an enthusiastic response from audiences during recent performances.
As NewSong continues to tour and promote the new album, Lee remains focused on the group’s fundamental purpose: creating music that connects people with a spiritual message of hope and love.
“When we worship authentically, the walls fall down,” Lee said. “People will notice, especially if we’re walking in the Spirit.”
For fans of Christian music seeking a sound that bridges traditional and contemporary styles, “Church People” offers a fresh perspective from a band that has consistently adapted while maintaining its core identity.
