Our first stop brings us to the White House and Donald Trump’s spokesperson Sean Spicer. When confronted in an Apple store by an Indian-American woman Spicer was quick to say: “Such a great country that allows you to be here.” She is “allowed” to be here the same way Spicer is: she is a citizen.

Others may jump to the conclusion that he made the comment about her based on her, um, other-than-white skin color. Me? I am willing to entertain other possibilities. Who am I kidding? Of course he made the comment because he saw someone who does not fit his image of a “real” American. Real Americans have white skin. Right? Right?!?

Next we move on to Iowa Rep. Steve King (R-White America). King, a regular fount of racist thought, tweeted a shout-out to another racist and wrote:

Steve King Racist Tweet
Steve King’s Racist Tweet

“Our destiny.” With this phrase he echoes the racist teachings that people of color and people from other nations offer little to our “white culture.” Indeed, he believes they have contributed little to any culture. In an interview with Chris Cuomo he doubled-down on his tweet:

“Either a Muslim American, an Italian-American, an Irish-Scotch-German-American — which is what your roots are — either those are all equal things or they are not. What is your answer?” King paused and then said, “They contribute differently to our culture and civilization.”

Spoken like a true white supremacist.

In a more racist statement he previously said about non-white people:

“I’d ask you to go back through history and figure out, where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you’re talking about, where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization?”

King is being cheered along by the usual conservative racists.

Most Republican leaders have been slow to condemn Rep. King. And the rank and file, the people he is playing to, are generally silent. They individually claim to not be racist but they collectively are cool with following a racist leader. See the moral difference there? Yeah, me neither. Silence is complicity.

The moralists on the right who have lectured us for decades about morality, principles, “Biblical principles” (not to be confused with plain-old principles), and personal responsibility need to step up. Your moral voice is greatly diminished by your support of Trump and silence in the face of a man like this will silence it forever. Speak up! America is great when we repudiate hate and racism. You did want to “Make America Great Again,” right? Right?!? Sigh…
