I know today is supposed to be another chapter of Debi Pearlβs big bad book on brains, but yesterday afternoon I saw this and had to do a double take at the sheer audacity of Dave Ramsey. Debi tomorrow. Dave today. He is ignoring many of the safety guidelines put in place by the CDC for handling the Coronavirus, and it looks like the main motivation is gaining that filthy lucre.Β Instead of having his employees working from home, or suspending business altogether in this very critical juncture he is insisting his employees all come into work, business as usual. No matter than one of the employees was diagnosed with the virus.
If youβre not familiar with Dave Ramsey he has made a career out of giving financial advice to the Evangelical crowd and charging them most handsomely for it. He owns and runs the ministry βFinancial Peace Universityβ, a sort of course you can take through your local churches that is very basic and very old financial ideas. He didnβt invent what heβs selling, Heβs merely lifted ideas from everywhere and put them together.
Daveβs program revolves around something from a household management book in England in the 1800s. Dividing your wages out into so many marked envelopes budgeted for each expense. Itβs not rocket science, you can find all the same info heβs selling for free online, and it does not really translate well to our modern times. But thatβs alright since many Evangelicals seem to yearn to go back in time. Itβs not for everyone, but Dave really rakes in the dough from the faithful from his program. Heβs written a pile of books, and hosts a radio show.
Full disclosure. I sat through three of his classes at my local Methodist church before bailing after discovering this is merely the British envelope scheme updated. Not impressed, and it was not helpful for me. Yet scores of Evangelicals love him and his quaintly old fashioned ideas. When he said pay off the smallest bills first, not the higher interest ones I was out of there. You always pay off the ones with the higher interest first to save money. There, I gave you financial advice and didnβt charge you a thousand dollars.
I guess thereβs a sucker born every minute.
Nashville Scene has obtained a copy of the memo Ramsey sent out justifying his decision to keep the office open, even as non-essential business are going with remote telework, reducing hours or shutting down. Itβs clear its all about the money with him, just like with most Evangelicals. Screw the workers, screw the people, make sure he gets paid. His god is M=O-N-E-Yβ¦. Gee, I wish the Bible had something to say about the love of money /sarcasmβ¦.
One thing is for sure. In times like this you get to see what it is people really believe and worship in their heart of hearts when the rubber meets the road.
I am hearing rumors that the U.S. government might be about to issue a two week lockdown on everyone, only allowing people out to get groceries, medicines and healthcare. I suspect the same thing is coming here to Costa Rica. Two days ago I went out to a beach at a national park that I routinely walk at. That beach is always emptied, just a few surfers. This time it was rather crowded, and I left quickly after seeing people doing all sorts of things that are bad ideas. I was bummed because I need and want exercise. Now itβs been announced that all gyms, pools, beaches and national parks are closed here.
How are you doing during this?
