Ah the astuteness of authority, the cunning of control, and the subtleties of speech! Structures and those in authority use speech as a means of control. “We love you as you are” is bait to lure you in. “We love you too much to let you stay that way” is fear to make you conform. And “God never loved you to begin with” is a subtle theological excuse used by those in power to explain why you rejected their authority.... Read more

Click on the cartoon for a larger image. This man should have been more careful about who he thought was in and who he thought was out. Matthew makes it quite clear in chapter 7 that those who thought they were in were not. They were sincerely spiritual people who prophesied, cast out devils and did many wonderful works, all in the name of Jesus. Jesus’ interpretation of their religious activity was that they were in fact works of iniquity.... Read more

You can get a fine art print of this picture here. 1 Kings 19:9… “And Elijah came to a cave, and he stayed there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him there…” Sometimes, and frequently, you have to break away from everyone and everything, and with all your courage enter into the dark cave all by yourself, face your fears, and find the truth for yourself. After I completed this drawing it struck me that she can... Read more

I was talking with a good friend of mine yesterday. She was outside reading ‘Streams’, a devotional book that she loves. She was feeling very much at peace and content. She felt the Presence. She was happy. Today she got some disturbing news and it totally upset her. We were talking about it. I said, “Unfortunately, the other half of ‘Streams‘ is ‘In The Desert’“. Easy to say. Harder to do. Maybe even impossible. It’s easy when you are in... Read more

When the writings declare that God has compassion on all that he has made, I like to take that seriously. I know there are a few instances where it says God hates, but caution needs to be taken these days as to what that means deeply. The greater theme of love predominates the message. All things, all people, are aswim, consciously or not, in the Blessed Compassion. Should not we who have read or heard this message live accordingly? Get... Read more

This is an ORIGINAL David Hayward miniature watercolor and ink piece measuring 2.5″x3.5″ on Strathmore watercolor paper. It doesn’t come matted or framed. It is signed by me, the artist, dhayward. It’s an ORIGINAL PAINTING! Not a copy or print. Ah, the comfort of true friends! Jesus restores a man. He wants to follow Jesus and work for him. No. In Mark 5:19 Jesus says that he’d rather the man go home to his friends and just talk about what... Read more

Everyone has the right to their own opinion. In free nations this is recognized and respected by law. This right is called “inalienable” because of this reason. It is unable to be taken away from or given away by the possessor. Ever. I appreciate that. So should you. The problem begins when we claim or insist attitudinally or vocally that others possess our opinion. This is called fundamentalism. This is something that I am deeply concerned with. I want to... Read more

A little parody on 10 reasons why you shouldn’t call yourself the Dove World Outreach Center: Doves symbolize peace. They are meek, mild and gentle. DWOC’s speech is filled with war, and its leader sounds aggressive. Braveheart music in the background of their video conjures up war horses, not doves. It conjures up conquering, not come-unity. The use of the word “world” in conjunction with “dove” and “outreach” implies loving efforts, when in fact suspicion and hate is at the... Read more

When I was in public school I struggled with an inferiority complex. Even though some people remember me as being well-liked and sometimes even popular, I don’t remember it that way. I suppose it is the more powerful and overwhelming emotions we remember… like feelings of inferiority, shame, and rejection. I sometimes still struggle with these things. Many people do. But I also remember from when I was a small child feeling loved and cared for. Even before the church... Read more
