A friend sent me a note the other day asking why I annually note Poe’s birthday and post that silly video making it look as if he is reciting his poem the Raven?

Well, the answer is the same as why I usually note Rasputin’s birthday.

Because I have a blog dedicated to whatever passes in front my eyes and catches my fancy.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

And of course there is usually some connection to something…

Poe was important to me as a child, and while no longer so, I honor his gifts to me and others in this small way, so long as something more important or just something that catches my eye first doesn’t come down the pike.

Rasputin, well, that’s slightly more complicated.

I’m a professional religious person, and I’m always interested in other practitioners of my trade, particularly those who live farther out at the edge than me.

And…

When I was young, many, many aeons ago, and working in a bookstore in San Diego I was given the opportunity to meet Rasputin’s daughter who made her living rewriting her father’s autobiography every so many years. She was on, oh I don’t know, perhaps her third tour with a new revision of the book. It was mildly inconvenient. And so I passed on the chance. Later that year she died…

There’s a lesson of some sort in that, perhaps.

And, sometimes a cigar…
