INNER CIRCLE: The Name Unspoken

INNER CIRCLE: The Name Unspoken

“There is a name which is not heard in the world: It is the name that the Father gave the Son; it is above everything, it expresses the Father. The Son wouldn’t have become the Father unless he had taken the name of the Father. Those who bear this name within them do not speak of it.

“Those who do not bear it within them know nothing of it. Truth brought names into the world for us, because it’s impossible for us to learn Truth without these names.

“The Truth is One and many, so as to teach us the innumerable One of Love.” [The Gospel of Philip vs. 12]

The passage above from the Gospel of Philip appears to be a parallel verse to what we read from the Gospel of Truth here:

“And the Name of the Father is the Son. It is he who, in the beginning, gave a name to the One who came forth from him, who was himself. And he birthed him as a son. He gave him his name, which belonged to him. All that exists with him belongs to the Father. The name belongs to him; the child belongs to him. It is possible to see the son, but the name is invisible, for it alone is the mystery of the invisible which comes to ears completely filled with him. For they do not speak the Father’s name, but it is revealed through a child. In this way, the name is great.” [Gospel of Truth 23:1-9]

In other words, this mystery, which cannot be seen, fills everything in every way. Our ears are filled with this Name, even if we cannot see it, or know it, or speak it.

This relationship between the Father and the Son predates the formulation of the doctrine we now know as the Trinity, where the Godhead is understood by some to be expressed as the Triune [Three-in-One] persona of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. However, these passages focus primarily on the Father and the Son and their intimate connection. This connection mirrors the relationship between God and Humanity where the One Divine Consciousness is the source of all consciousness, including our own. We – like the Son – were given a name from the Father and this is what makes us one with the Divine. We are “begotten” of God and made of God. Our identity is intertwined with God.

The Name is a mystery that we cannot fathom even though we are all immersed in it. It is the very fabric of reality itself. It is the Logos that was spoken into the darkness before light was formed.

This Name has no composition of letters or sounds, but it resonates throughout the fiber of every living thing in the universe.

We know the Name as we know ourselves. We are the reflection of the image of this great mystery that is mirrored in the glass, darkly seen and blurred by the distance between atoms and molecules that are forever in proximity but never quite touching.

In this passage from the Gospel of Philip, there is a notation about the limitations of human language when it comes to knowing and expressing the Truth:

“Those who bear this name within them do not speak of it. Those who do not bear it within them know nothing of it. Truth brought names into the world for us, because it’s impossible for us to learn Truth without these names.”

As human beings who have been created in the image of God and made of God, we “bear this name within” ourselves, but we do not speak of this name out loud. Presumably because it is a name beyond human utterance. This name is, in the words of the Angel of the Lord, “…too wonderful for anyone to understand” [Judges 13:18], and yet, we can “know” this name within ourselves experientially without hearing it said out loud.

However, even as our language fails at expressing the ineffable Name, it is nevertheless a useful, although crude tool, “because it is impossible for us to learn Truth without these names.”

So, we either know this Name that cannot be spoken or we do not. If we do “bear this Name within,” we do not speak of it, but it speaks to us where deep calls to deep, with groanings no words can express.

The conclusion to this passage simply says:

“The Truth is One and many, so as to teach us the innumerable One of Love.”

Again, there is a paradox of both “One and many” which teaches us yet another paradox of “the innumerable One” for which there are no words adequate enough to fully express how high, and wide, and long, and deep this Love of Christ which transcends all knowing.

God is the Truth. God is both One and many. The Great Consciousness is everything, and everything is the Great Consciousness.
