The Holy Fingers of Jesus: On the Execution of Torrey McNabb

The Holy Fingers of Jesus: On the Execution of Torrey McNabb 2017-10-23T23:30:17-06:00

Torrey Twane McNabb

The diagnosis is terminal. Truth be known, you probably only have a week or two left. Fear inhabits every orifice of your body. There is nowhere to go. There is no one to turn to. There is only one thing to do…die. Then, the phone rings. On the other end of the line, a stranger offers help. For your last few days, the stranger provides you with shelter and care. The beauty of their sacrifice is amazing. Love is everywhere. When the time comes and your words begin to slow, you bring the stranger close and shout, “Thank You!” Then, you die.

The sentence is death. Day after day, you are tortured. Anger inhabits every orfice of your body. There is nowhere to go. There is no one to turn to. There is only one thing left to do…die. No one calls. No one writes. The torture only gets worse. Hunger. Hallucinations. Pain. Hurt. They’re all there. No one cares. Love is nowhere. When the time comes, you are taken to the chamber. You have been encouraged to go respectfully. The needle is inserted. Before the poison flows through your veins, you are asked if you have any final words, you scream, “I hate you!” With your middle fingers extended, you die.

In 1997, Torrey McNabb killed Montgomery, Alabama police officer Anderson Gordon. For his actions, McNabb was sentenced to death. For the past twenty years, the people of Alabama have tortured him. For the past twenty years, the people of Alabama have sought to kill him. This has not been a situation where McNabb has been loved and taken care off. This situation has been about vengeance. When McNabb raised both of his middle fingers, he was giving the people of Alabama what they deserved. I don’t understand what all of the shock is about. You can’t expect someone to give you a “Thank You!” after you torture and kill them. This isn’t sacrificial love. I’m glad that Torrey McNabb resisted until the very end. I wish we would too. The death penalty deserves all of our middle fingers. Let’s raise them high until all of this bullshit is over.

The holy fingers of Jesus are with us.

Fuck the Death Penalty!

Amen.
