I’m the theologian-in-residence for Global Training Network (GTN). Previously, my family and I lived in East Asia, where we helped plant churches before joining a team that founded an underground seminary for house church pastors.

Here are the needs, work, and values that motivate me, my family, and our ministry partners.

The Need

Church leaders in the Majority World are desperate for theological training. Yet so many lack access! While some people attempt to address this issue, so much still needs to be done and improved. For example, …

1. Quality

The lack of credentialed teachers and accredited schools means there is very little quality control regarding what’s taught. Cults pop up everywhere.

2. Contextualization

Indigenous pastors don’t have contextualized theological instruction and resources. Consequently, this encumbers the health and fruitfulness of their ministry.

3. Cross-cultural missions

Numerous churches want to send missionaries to plant churches among the least-reached peoples of the world, but they can’t do that without training.

Our Work

Our family and support team want to respond to the theological famine in the Majority World. With GTN, we are invited to do three things.

• develop contextualized theological training and resources for global churches
• help missionaries improve their training, especially in theological contextualization
• build the Missional Theology Initiative, a long-term training program that expands access to theological education for the global church.

Our Values

Values determine both why we serve and how we do ministry. Here are 4 LIFE values that shape our work.

• Listening

None of us have it all figured out. We need to listen to others. Learning never stops.

• Interdependence

The church is called a “body.” We’re called to interdependence, not independence.

• Faithfulness

“Well done good and faithful servant.” That’s what we all want to hear. Faithfulness is the soil of spiritual fruit.

• Exegesis

Scripture should shape not only our message but also our methods of ministry.
