I don’t have to convince you that bad things happen to good people or that injustice, sickness, and death exist. You believe in these things because you know they are true; you can see them with your own eyes.
It is easier to believe there is evil in this world than to think there is any good. Pain, suffering, and trials easily overshadow the beautiful moments in life and the good that can be found in people and all around us.
For Prophet is a Christian film released on July 26th. It addresses the battle between an angel and a demon who is trying to influence the life of the main character, Damon. The movie reveals how both good and evil exist in this world, and sometimes, it just takes a shift in perspective to magnify the good instead of the bad.
What Do You See?
In the movie For Prophet, a big question mark is presented over the life of the main character, Damon, that we all need to consider when it comes to faith—you believe in demons, but why don’t you believe in angels? This made me think about how the world is so quick to believe in the evil and the bad, but we don’t believe in the good.
Damon claims to have lost his faith, but it is clear he still believes in God. However, he sees only the bad in his life and is mad at God. His pain, suffering, loss, and grief are magnified by a demon living right alongside him, tormenting him.
But Damon’s brother’s prayer triggers deliverance from an angel named Raphael. In female form, the Archangel Raphael brings the message to Damon, letting him know God has chosen him to be a prophet and deliver his city from destruction.
While Damon claimed he did not believe in God, he did believe in the demon that was tormenting him. Damon could see the demon, who carried around a camera and would constantly echo the thoughts in Damon’s mind.
These thoughts were filled with hurtful words and prevented Damon from getting close to anyone, especially his wife. Damon’s faith didn’t matter because his mind was filled with fear, and he listened to and followed the instructions of the demon in his life.
What Do You Hear?
According to IMDB, For Prophet is classified as a comedy family drama. However, I was emotional throughout the film. I had compassion for Damon; the demon in his life would not shut up, and the words being said were hurtful. This made it very difficult to follow along with what was happening in the scenes that played out on the screen. So many people were talking at once, and the demon’s voice was often the loudest.
While the dialog in the movie is frustrating to watch and understand, it helps the viewer see what Damon is going through.
Everyone can relate to the many thoughts in our heads and the voices around us telling us what to do. While watching this movie, I could understand Damon’s struggle. It was hard to watch at times, but I was drawn into what was happening throughout the film.
What Will You Do?
Damon has a choice to make. Throughout the movie, the angel and the demon fight for his attention and tell him what to do. There are several mentions of free will and surrender. Damon has much to learn, and fighting to loosen himself from the demon’s grip is difficult.
He struggles with finding what he thinks, wants, and what motivates him. Forgiveness, joy, and confidence elude Damon. The angel and the demon get frustrated with Damon as he goes through the days trying to discover his next steps. Ultimately, it is up to Damon to find the answers and the truth he seeks.
The Struggle Is Real
For Prophet was a good, entertaining movie. I was immediately drawn into the main character’s life and struggles. It was fast-paced, with action in every scene. Even though For Prophet is a comedy, I cried more than I laughed.
I am no theologian, but I have questions about the theology portrayed in this movie. There is some mention of free will, surrender, and even the Holy Spirit. However, I don’t recall the mention of Jesus.
Several discussions also occur about the gender of the angel Raphael. One short scene references the only time the Archangel Raphael was mentioned in the Book of Tobit, a canonical book within the Catholic faith that is considered deuterocanonical in the Protestant faith.
These deep theological topics can’t be fully discussed in a movie but are quickly touched on throughout.
Overall, For Prophet was an encouraging Christian movie that addressed some of the struggles every human being faces daily. The characters in this movie are relatable because they are going through what we all go through in life.
Change Your Perspective
For Prophet left me asking myself: Why don’t we believe in angels? Why don’t we see the good in this life?
The supernatural world exists whether we want to admit it or not. If we could find a way to shift our perspective—what we see, hear, and do with our lives—then life could be different for us all. You don’t have to be a prophet to understand this concept. We need to read our Bible. There, we will find the wisdom needed to lean on through every season of life.
