There has been a growing trend in some states focused on keeping parents out of the loop on what their children are being taught in school. Just this past week in California, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning school districts from “requiring that parents be notified of their child’s gender identification change.” There has been a growing trend amongst states that have aggressively worked to implement changes to the transparency of what their children are learning, and what the school focuses on in the classroom. This is a battle over our kids and some states believe they have rights over our children.

“Gender Identity” A Driving Force

I remember attending school as a kid and not knowing anything about my teachers, except their names and their expectations for me as a student. Today, we have teachers sharing their personal views on politics, religion, and ideologies including their “gender identity” to children as young as in elementary schools. As Catholics, gender was never a question. Our gender is assigned by God and we lived our lives based on that assignment, but in today’s world there is a mindset that you have a gender assignment and a gender identity. Therein lies the confusion for many children. One of the most disturbing aspects of this mindset is that the children have a right to change their gender to conform to their “gender identity.” This perspective is driving an inordinate number of children to gender re-assignment surgery at very young ages. In fact, some parents are pushing this mindset on their children at very early ages. No wonder these kids are confused.

The bill signed in California is particularly egregious as it cuts parents out of the discussion related to the student’s “gender identity”. Apparently this is the case in New Jersey as well. Here’s a clip from The Center Square from last September

In California and New Jersey, the government has gone to court to shield parents from knowing what gender their children have chosen while at school.

In other states, such as Michigan and Pennsylvania, the policies on parental notification are left up to the individual school districts to determine. In Ann Arbor public schools in Michigan, the district does not require parental notification of a student’s transition or use of different pronouns. Just five miles away in Dexter Community Schools, the district doesn’t have any policy regarding parental notification.

The Battle Over Our Children

This mindset of the state “owning” the children is an attempt to drive a wedge into families and indoctrinate kids into the ideologies pushed in these locales. By aggressively promoting “gender identity” and shielding parents from their children’s “decisions” schools, and government are telling these kids that your parents are an obstacle to who you are and/or want to be. This breeds distrust of the parents that drives that wedge even deeper within a family. The schools and local governments have no right to “take over” the kids future while pushing an agenda that goes against the family values promoted by the parents. This is effectively a “war over our children.” Many children including teens can be easily confused or led down a path that could significantly affect their lives in horrible ways that may not be easily resolved. The push for “gender affirming care” is nothing more than lipstick on a pig as it masks the challenges and horrors of gender transitioning support including surgery all while the parents are kept in the dark as to what is happening with their kids. Let these kids grow up and then make the decisions for themselves as adults and no longer part of a captive audience.

I believe that God finds good out of every situation. The Covid-19 pandemic was a horrible event killing millions of people, but remote learning allowed parents to see what their kids were being taught in the schools, and to push back on what they did not agree with. This also identified our federal government as an accomplice into indoctrinating kids into an ideology that is not shared by all. When the DOJ went as far as designating parents as “domestic terrorists”, we knew for sure that they were deeply involved. Parents please make sure that you fully understand what your kids are being taught in schools and fight to maintain your role in their lives. Many schools, and our government can not be trusted to defer to the values you want your children to have. Stay involved with your kids and stand up to school boards that feel it is their place to “help” your kids to decide what is best for them.

Have you or do you know anyone who has experienced this situation? What are your thoughts related to this subject?  As always, comments are welcome and encouraged and I will respond as quickly as I can.

God Bless

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years I was a member of the Methodist church where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector for the church. I always felt I was a very faith-filled person, but that something was missing. My wife is Catholic and my children were baptized as Catholic and this helped me to find what I was looking for to be part of something so much bigger than myself walking together with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director, and very active in ministry serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister in addition to providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and the terminally ill in local hospitals and Hospice Care centers and found these ministries to be very difficult, but extremely rewarding.
