Today is the official release of my book, The New Testament Commentary Guide (Lexham Press, 2020).
Here is why I wrote this little book. Almost every week a pastor or student asks me about my recommendations for “good commentaries” for a particular book of the New Testament. There are so many options out there, how do you decide which will give you biggest bang for your buck? Or which scholars are true experts?
I know the commentary terrain pretty well; I own hundreds of them, and I have written a few. Some commentaries are bad. Some are great. Many of them are so-so. So, here I have collected, all in one place, my top lists of commentaries book by book by through the whole New Testament. I give comments on why I recommend certain scholars and commentaries.
I also talk about resources like one-volume whole NT commentaries, single-author series, study Bibles, German and French commentaries and I provide descriptions of 20 popular English commentary series. Also, I get asked a lot about commentaries written by women and/or scholars of color. So I have a whole section where I list book-by-book commentaries written by diverse scholars. I believe it is the only list of this kind in print.
