A lot of parents sent their kids off to college over the past few weeks. For Chicago Sun-Times writer Alejandro Escalona, it was a proud but bittersweet time as he did the same with his son, Daniel, who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy which slowly robbed him of his ability to run, walk, and move his arms. The disease didn’t dim Daniel’s spirit or determination, however. He is starting school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His father reflected... Read more

Last night’s finale of the ABC reality series “NY Med” involved a miracle. No, not a call-the-Vatican-and-start-the-investigations type of miracle. It was more along the lines of the song lyric “Even a miracle needs a hand” from the animated Christmas cartoon “T’was the Night Before Christmas.” Rita Saverino, a wife and mother of two, had been diagnosed with a grapefruit sized cancerous tumor behind her liver. The only way to get it out and make sure the cancer is removed... Read more

As 77-year-old Jane Corbett drove to buy groceries for the St. Louis, Missouri, homeless shelter where she volunteers, hundreds of dollars were flying out of the envelope she had accidentally left on top of her car while buckling in her adopted special needs child. Construction worker Ray Leuthauser, who was driving behind Corbett, saw what was happening and unsuccessfully honked at her to try to get her to stop. He finally just pulled over and started grabbing all the money... Read more

“I think we identify with people who can’t help themselves.  In some really weird way, I never realized that until Virginia died,” said Diana Costine, RN, an emergency room nurse on ABC’s summer reality series “NY Med.” The eight-week series takes place at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in its Weill-Cornell and Columbia medical centers. Though Dr. Oz, who works as a surgeon there, was initially used to draw attention to the show because of his media... Read more

The following post was written by The Christophers’ Jerry Costello. It’s followed by a podcast of my interview with Mark Shriver: You’ve spent a lifetime reading about Sargent Shriver, if you’re like most of us, and by now you probably think you know him pretty well: Kennedy in-law; Peace Corps founder, vice-presidential candidate, Special Olympics honcho, and on and on. A life well-lived. What more is there to know? Plenty. And at the heart of it is this: he put... Read more

The following is an entry from The Christophers’ upcoming “Three Minutes a Day” book which will be available for pre-order soon: If someone told you that an Olympic bronze medalist was selling her medal, you might assume that athlete was dissatisfied with her third-place finish. Nothing could be further from the truth for Zofia Noceti-Klepacka from Poland. Yes, Noceti-Klepacka won bronze in a windsurfing competition at the 2012 Olympics and plans to sell her medal. The reason, however, is to... Read more

After several days of highlighting Christian Olympic athletes, today I have to praise Jewish-American gymnast, Aly Raisman, who entered the Olympic games as a bit of an underdog – or at least not as high profile an athlete as some of her teammates. Yet last night, the 18-year-old “elder statesmen” of the U.S. gymnastics team gave the powerhouse performance of her life to win the gold medal in the floor exercise competition, becoming the first U.S. woman ever to win... Read more

On her Facebook page this morning, Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas posted the following message: “Whew I finally got some good rest after having to deal with some of this negativity. First my hair – then my mom. I guess noone could wait till we finished competing so that we could keep our concentration and focus. But you know what one more final to go! Ladies let’s make it count!!!! LET’S GET EM!! #USA #beamfinals #floorfinals Pray for us! ♥... Read more

After reading the excellent profile of Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky in last week’s The Catholic Standard, I had to watch her race in the women’s 800m freestyle on Friday night. After all, here was the youngest member of the entire U.S. Olympic team – age 15 – swimming a grueling race that required her to cross the length of the 50m pool 16 times. In addition, she’s a teen whose humility is acknowledged by her classmates and teachers at Stone... Read more
