Here are seven Bible verses about safety for the believer in Jesus Christ.
Psalm 91:1-2 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Psalm 91 is among the most read psalms because many Christians can identify with the psalmist who wrote that God promises deliverance (v 3), shelter (v 4), and freedom from fear (v 5), day and night (v 6). Even when death surrounds us (v 7), we have a sure and certain refuge (v 9). The psalmist closes by writing that God “holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation” (vv. 14-16). God knows your name, He hears your call, He answers you, and is with you “in trouble” and will “rescue” those who are His. What more could you ask of God than that?
Proverbs 11:14 “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
When we are making major life decisions, I have heard it said to never be in a hurry, never make a decision when your angry, tired, hungry or depressed and make sure you speak with others about it first. Solomon is telling us that there is safety in numbers. When you hear several of your Christian friends answer you in the same or in a similar way, which might be God’s way of telling you that it’s the right thing to do or it’s not a good choice.
Psalm 4:8 “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
Much like the 23rd Psalm, this one gives us the image of being safely led by God into places of rest. There is obviously enough safety surrounding them that they are able to lie down and sleep in peace. For those who have repented and trusted in Christ, they have the peace of God (Rom 5:1) and they can pillow their head at night with full assurance that if they died or the Lord returned during the night, they would have the glory of God revealed to them and enter into the kingdom with great joy (Rev 22). For those who cannot rest in this knowledge, they have no real assurance about anything after death, but the Bible is clear that after death, there will be a judgment (Heb 9:27).
First John 5:18 “We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.”
If you are a friend of the world then you are an enemy of God (James 4:4) and so the reason unbelievers criticize the Bible is because it wasn’t written to them! They are of the world. They are reading someone else’s mail; ours! The Apostle John can easily see who is and who isn’t a real Christian by writing that if someone claims to be “born of God” but “keep on sinning,” you can be sure of this; they are no child of God because “No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God” (1st John 3:9). None of us will ever be sinless (1st John 1:8, 10) but we will be sinning less often than the world does. You can be sure of this; “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness” (1st John 3:4) and “No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him” (1st John 3:6). The conclusion is that God protects His own children and especially from the evil one (Satan).
Psalm 55:18 “He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me.”
What greater safety is there than to have your soul redeemed by the blood of the Lamb of God? John the Baptist’s father, Zechariah, prophesied “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old” (Luke 1:68-70), clearly referring to Jesus Christ. Today, anyone who has placed their trust in Christ has had their soul redeemed and now their eternal soul is “in safety,” forevermore.
Job 5:11-12 “he sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.”
The Book of Job is part of what is called “Wisdom Literature,” not meaning its fiction, but it’s full of godly wisdom much like the Book of Proverbs, however some of this wisdom is found in the New Testament too, like in the Book of James. These two verses above show that there is wisdom in the knowledge that God will exalt the humble and will frustrate and debase those who exalt themselves. This is what Jesus taught as well (Matt 23:12) but it is diametrically opposed to the way the world operates, in general.
Psalm 78:53 “He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.”
The 23rd Psalm has similar language found in Psalm 78:63 where David wrote “He leads me beside still waters” (Psalm 23:2b) but in Psalm 78, Asaph is writing about ancient Israel being led into safety by God. For example, when they were trapped in the desert between Pharaoh’s armies and the Red Sea, “they were not afraid” and saw their enemies overwhelmed by the power of God.
Conclusion
What greater safety than to be delivered from hell? It’s not that we only want fire insurance but we want to give our lives to Him in order that He might use us for His glory. He intends for us to reach others (Matt 28:19-20) and to not be ashamed of the gospel (Rom 1:16). He wants us to include the necessity of repentance and faith in the gospel (Mark 1:15), and to point others to the cross of Christ, so that they too might be saved. We are not saved just to rest in our salvation; we rest in Christ but go for Him into all the world, even if it’s right next door.
