Top 7 Bible Verses For Lawyers Or Attorneys To Take To Heart

Here are 7 great Bible verses for lawyers or attorneys to take to heart in the performance of their jobs.

Matthew 22:35 “And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.”

This lawyer that asked Jesus a question was trying to trick Him or trip Him but and of course the lawyer was unable to do this but part of a lawyer or attorney’s job is to question witnesses in court and their purpose is to see that their clients are served justice.

Proverbs 31:8-9 “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

This is what lawyers or attorneys do; they speak for the mute, they defend the destitute, they defend the rights of the poor and the needy against the rich. That is what many lawyers do. They speak for us when we cannot adequately speak for ourselves.

Isaiah 59:4 “No one enters suit justly; no one goes to law honestly; they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies, they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity.”

When God was speaking through Isaiah and indicting the deceitful lawyers, they were openly rebuked for speaking lies, giving empty pleas, and not pursing the law honestly. Many of the lawyers in that day were giving birth to iniquity. Today, some still are, although certainly not all of them.

Open-your-mouth-for-the

Luke 10:25 “And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Sadly, the lawyer asked the wrong question; what must he do to inherit eternal life. The fact is that nothing he could ever do would merit eternal life for it is only by the gift of God that we can be saved (Eph 2:8-9). It’s not that you must do this or do that or do, do, do, but in Jesus Christ, at the cross, it was done!

Luke 11:46 “And he said, “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.”

This was Jesus speaking and He gave a stern rebuke of the lawyers in His day as they were putting requirements on people that would seem impossible for them to ever achieve. They made the law such a burden that even the Sabbath had become unbearable. There were so many laws added by the lawyers that it was impossible to know them all, not to mention, keep them all.

First Corinthians 6:6 “but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers?”

No real mention of lawyers is found within this verse but the idea is that of using the law to sue another brother or sister in Christ. Paul rebuked them by writing “To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded” (1st Cor 6:7)? A lawsuit infers the use of a lawyer but it is sad indeed when Christians have to resort to suing one another.

Proverbs 24:11 “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.”

This is a lawyer or attorney’s job description in a sense; rescue those who are at risk for being taken away and those who are tried even though they are innocent. A lawyer is the voice of the defendant and has skills and knowledge that the client does not have and by this education, he or she can recuse those from being falsely accused, arrested, or imprisoned.

Conclusion

Today, all who trust in Christ, have an Advocate before the Father or as the Apostle John wrote “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1st John 2:1). This High Priest of God is also our Mediator who is our intercessor too. We have no other access to the Father except by and through Christ (Acts 4:12) and for those who have repented and trusted in Christ, the charges against their sins have been thrown out of the heavenly court.
