Here are my top 7 Bible verses that speak about God’s great omnipotence.
What is Omnipotence?
Omnipotence is basically a compound word that means all (omni) powerful (potent) and if you have read enough of the Bible you can clearly see that God is indeed omnipotent; all powerful. It means that God has unlimited authority and infinite power. Here are 7 verses that describe God’s omnipotence.
Romans 1:20 “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”
Here we can read about God’s omnipotence for His power is eternal and is visible by the creation we see around us. All things were made because He spoke them into existence. How else did matter come into being? This is why the atheists and skeptics are “without excuse.”
Colossians 1:6 “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”
Anything that exists was created and all things that were created, whether they are visible or invisible was for Him and by Him. This includes every dominion, power, throne, ruler, and every single authority on earth and in heaven…all created by Him and He is sovereign over all that there is that exists and all that exists was created by Him.
Hebrews 1:3a “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.”
Here we see that the universe is the exact imprint of his nature in the sense that to the human eye, the universe seems infinite, enormous, and unending. We don’t even know the full expanse of the universe. In other words, we have no clue how vast it is. The size alone cannot be estimated. Even more, the universe is being upheld by God’s own Word for in His Word, there is His power.
Nehemiah 9:6 “You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.”
As the Apostle John writes “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3) and all things means all things in any language. There was nothing that was made that was has not been made by Him. There are no exceptions.
Colossians 1:7 “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Here it obviously says that even the very nature of matter is being held together by the power of His Word. All things hold together and consist by this power of His Word for without this power, the universe and all matter would enter into chaos and life would not be possible.
Psalm 33:9 “For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.”
This is seen in the very first chapter of the Bible as “God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light” (Gen 1:3). Indeed, “Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it” (Lam 3:37)? The answer to that rhetorical question of course is no one can; none except our omnipotent God.
Isaiah 44:24 “Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself.”
The miracle that is human life is only made possible by Author of Life. He is sufficiently powerful enough to stretch out the heavens and spread out the earth yet form life at the tiniest, microscopic level and He needs no assistance from mankind. None can aid God in these majestic, mighty, and all-powerful works. There is no one to compare or contrast with God for He is infinitely above all things and is indescribable and inscrutable.
Conclusion
The Bible has more than 7 verses of course that speak of His omnipotent power but the greatest miracle might be that of human conversion where He redeems our life and grants eternal life to us through His Son by the forgiveness of sin and the atoning work at Calvary. That is incredibly powerful; turning sinner into saint.
