Here are 7 of my top Bible verses about the heart.
The Heart is Deceitful and Wicked
Jeremiah 17:9-10 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
You think you know your own heart? Think again! Our hearts can deceive us so easily. God says “who can understand it?” but He answers His own question by saying “the Lord search(s) the heart.” Many who profess Christ but live like the Devil have deceived themselves into thinking that they are Christians but their mouth betrays what’s in their heart.
Don’t Let Your Hearts be Troubled
John 14:1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.”
The disciple’s hearts were troubled because of the uncertainty of their future. Jesus had been telling them that He was going away and that they couldn’t go where He was. Put yourself in their sandals…they had been with Jesus for over 3 years and now He was going to leave them. What were they to do? What were they thinking? Jesus, knowing their hearts, perceived that they were very troubled over this and so that’s why Jesus told them to not let their hearts be troubled over His leaving. He told them that they already believe in God so they should also believe in Him. Do we not have troubled hearts too, much like the disciples did? We must stand firm in our belief in Christ because as He told the disciples, He also tells us “If I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going” (John 14:3-4). Do we really believe this?
The Lord Weighs the Heart
Proverbs 21:2 “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.”
This is similar to what Jeremiah wrote (17:9-10) because we often might seem to be doing the right thing “but the Lord weighs the heart” and knows what is really in it. We might think we are making the right choice but God can see into our hearts and see our intents, thoughts, and motives. That’s why when he weights the heart He knows what’s in it. That’s why we must not lean on our own understanding but instead “Trust in the LORD with all your heart. And do not lean on your own understanding” (Prov 3:5).
God Knows the Heart
First Kings 8:39 “You know what is in everyone’s heart. So from your home in heaven answer their prayers, according to the way they live and what is in their hearts.”
Here the word “heart” is used twice which emphasizes the fact that God knows what is in every human heart. He will answer our prayers but only “according to the way [we] live” and according to “what is in [our] heart.” If our motives in prayer are for His glory, then God will answer that prayer but if we are seeking our own glory, God will frustrate our plans and not answer our prayers. This is because God will not ever share His glory with anyone (Isaiah 428, 11).
Purify the Heart
Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
This may be the best chapter in the entire Bible on repentance and it points to Who is the One Who creates a clean heart in us. Naturally, it is God and by His forgiveness and this forgiveness can renew us to a steadfast spirit. Steadfast is an interesting word that David uses because it means to have a new resoluteness, to stand more firmly in purpose, and to be fixed in a certain direction. Don’t we need that every day?
Peace with God
Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
I do not believe you can have the peace of God until you are at peace with God. How do we get such peace with God? Paul says in Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” When we have had our sins forgiven then we have peace with God and only then can we have the peace of God and this peace transcends or surpasses all human understanding and this peace guards our hearts and also our minds. Do you have peace with God today?
Mending the Brokenhearted
Psalm 34:18 “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
This verse is one of great tenderness and shows the great sensitivity of our awesome God. He is never closer to those who are brokenhearted and those who are crushed in their spirit. When God sees our pain it’s like He moves in closer but even a flower when it is crushed gives off a sweet fragrance and so when our spirit is crushed and our hearts are broken or shattered, know this; God is close.
Conclusion
If you have never repented and trusted in Christ, then you haven’t had a regenerated heart yet and have not yet been born again (John 3:3). If you choose to repent today, you can humble yourself, confess your sins, repent of them, and put your trust in the Savior and He will save those who call on His name. He can give you a new heart…one that is bent toward Him.
