Do you feel powerful? Depending on the day or the situation, your answer may vary. When faced with financial challenges, serious illness or a family member who has lost the faith, there’s a good chance you may be feeling powerless. You may wonder why God is asking you to “do the impossible”, especially since you’re not qualified. Here’s some good news. You’re more powerful than you think!
Before sending out the apostles (who were REALLY not qualified) to proclaim the kingdom of God, Jesus did something very important…
He summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal [the sick]. (Luke 9:1-2)
As baptized Catholics, we are called to share in the mission of the apostles by proclaiming the kingdom of God. In order to do that, we too have been given the “power” through our baptism and confirmation. You may not realize it, but through the Holy Spirit you too have been given “power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases”.
You are also sent to “proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick”. I’m not talking about fluffy power and symbolic healings, I’m talking about the real deal! Are you using that power? Why not? Many people never realize they have the gift of healing until they pray for someone who is sick. Why not give it a try? You may be shocked to see how Jesus works through you.
Let’s pray…
Holy Spirit, Sometimes we forget all about your power dwelling inside of us. We panic when we think about sharing the Good News or facing the challenges of daily life, forgetting that you are ready and willing to work through us. Grant us the confidence to follow the call of Jesus to “proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick”. With your help, we know it is possible. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
