Read more

“Marriage was ordained by God as a blessing to the human race. A certain wise man in the Scriptures, when enumerating which blessings are the most important, included ‘a wife and husband who live in harmony’ (The Wisdom of Sirach 25:1).” -St. John Chrysostom (347-407 AD) Harmony is the pleasing arrangement of different parts. In music, harmony is “the combination of simultaneously sounded musical notes to produce chords and chord progressions having a pleasing effect” (Oxford Dictionary). But the pleasing... Read more

Read more

Today’s Family Sunday Reflection (see 2 Mc 7:1-2,9-14) “It happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king, to force them to eat pork in violation of God’s law. One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: “What do you expect to achieve by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors.” -2 Maccabees 7:1-2 Here we have a family defying the orders... Read more

Dear fathers: I write to you from the heart. Not because I’m perfect or because I have it all figured out. I know how hard it is to be a father. I am a father of five children myself. Like you, I’m in this delicate but exceedingly important and beautiful journey called fatherhood. I have made many mistakes along the way and I try to learn from them. I regret many things. I realize that there is always room for... Read more

The USCCB applauds the passing of a new immigration legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship to thousands of immigrants. I encourage every Catholic to leave their political banner aside and support this effort that would provide legal protection to many immigrants. I’ve heard many Catholics repeatedly say that undocumented immigrants should be here the legal way or that they should somehow become “legalized.” This would be a “legal” way for them to obtain permanent residency and eventual citizenship.... Read more

Apparently the tragic death of 17-year-old Noa Pothoven has been widely misreported around the globe as euthanasia or assisted suicide, which is legal under certain circumstances in the Netherlands. According to new reports she in fact did ask to be euthanized but the hospital refused. It appears to be more of a case of suicide and not euthanasia. Her story is nonetheless tragic and we must continue to bring awareness to and take action against rape and all forms of... Read more
