Summer Wanes: Lemon Blueberry Muffins For Purification and Protection

Summer Wanes: Lemon Blueberry Muffins For Purification and Protection September 10, 2023

Summer wanes. It’s hard to believe we are in September. Children are back in school. The Autumn Equinox is fast approaching. And while the weather has remained warm (at times boiling), the cool morning temperatures as I leave for work remind me that sweater weather is coming. So, as we bid farewell to the warm months, preparing for the change of season, why not focus on purification and protection in Summer’s final weeks?

Summer Fruit

Blueberry is one of my favorite fruits. The blueberry is a fresh addition to recipes and full of flavor, vitamin C, and antioxidants. Yes, it is available year-round in grocery stores. However, there is nothing like blueberries picked from the bush or purchased at a local farmers’ market in the heat of Summer’s growth when the fruit is most fresh.

As a plant ally, blueberry is a beautiful choice for purification, healing, and peace, among other things. I know. It’s easy to overlook fruits or vegetables when looking for allies in magick. The tendency is to seek the best herbs, resins, and barks to add to spellcraft. Yet, I have found many fruits (such as the apple) are beneficial additions to focused intention.

Why is blueberry a good choice for purification?  Look at its natural properties – as mentioned, blueberries have antioxidants that help remove toxins from the body.  So, it can be a potent ally in magick when it’s time to remove what no longer serves. Or in preparation for a new season of life.

Summer’s Powerhouse

Everyone knows that lemon is a wonder when it comes to cleaning anything. One may find fresh scent, juice, peel, or oil in many products, all boasting the power of this citrus fruit.  Deservedly so, as the citric acid in lemon is antibacterial and antiseptic. It can clean surfaces, remove mildew, and freshen a room with the juice mixed with a pinch of baking soda.

There are myriad uses for lemon when it comes to cleaning. It has vitamin C for health and can be used in multiple ways in food and beverage. So, it’s natural to understand that as it works in the body for health and the home to cleanse, it adds a layer of protection as it works.

As a plant ally, lemon is an aid to energy, momentum, love, and friendship. It can be used in spells or washes to remove hexes and curses. The fresh scent brightens the mind and spirit toward creativity and can cheer a heavy room, removing negative energy. Lemon’s oil, seeds, and rind can be added to spells in bags, incense, candles, etc. So, it is a natural choice for protection as well.

Lemon Blueberry Muffins

As you say goodbye to Summer and welcome Autumn with its apples, pumpkins, and thinning veil, I suggest making a batch of lemon-infused blueberry muffins. Find your favorite recipe (mine is this Cranberry Orange Muffin recipe by Lilly Ernst) and bid Summer adieu with spells, rituals, or whatever suits your practice.

After being diagnosed with Celiac Disease over a year ago, I learned how to adjust recipes to my needs by changing the flour (including necessary measurements). It’s nothing to exchange a 1/4 cup of orange juice for lemon and 1 1/2 cups cranberries for blueberries (although I do more like 2 cups). So, make whatever tweaks are necessary and will benefit (or improve) the recipe.

As you do,  stir the cleansing and protection lemon offers into the batter as you add the juice to the recipe. Focus your intention on purification while folding blueberries (I like to add extra) into the mixture. In this way, you infuse healing magick into every bite and share it with whom you may.

Enjoy and Blessed Be.
