Tonight I’ll be doing a team debate in Springfield, MO. The resolution is “A Faith Commitment Is Necessary For The Pursuit Of Happiness.” My teammate will be a local, Cora Hanf and, surprise, we’ll be taking the negative. On the affirmative will be two locals, Reverend Sean McCormick and Pastor David VanBebber. The event takes place at the Plaster Student Union on the Missouri State University campus at 7pm. Should be fun. 🙂 Swing by if you’re in the area. Read more

Hey gang! I’ll be the speaker and musical guest at Wichita Oasis this weekend. The gathering is at 200 N. Broadway on Sunday, February 12. The doors open at 10:30 and program begins at 11. It’s free to get in! I’ll be bringing one of my students with me for a duet. Bryna is a second year voice student of mine who is toying with the idea of continuing singing into college. She’ll be singing “Amarilli, Mia Bella” (Caccini) in Burlington,... Read more

Well, this is not surprising: About one-third of all Americans think that you have to be a Christian to truly be an American — despite the history of religious pluralism that dates back to the nation’s very earliest days. In a timely survey released Wednesday afternoon, just as the United States is debating the merits of suspending immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries, the Pew Research Center asked residents of numerous nations what it takes to truly belong in their countries.... Read more

I suspect for most people that making healthy changes to their lives is a matter of discipline that eventually leads to a healthy lifestyle. For people like me (recovering anorexic), it’s instead a matter of balance that seems almost impossible to find. So I’ve made the changes to diet and exercise. Going to sleep last night my empty stomach brought a sort of masochistic smile to my face. I wanted more. I immediately caught myself wondering how long I could... Read more

While no day is best to ban refugees from war-torn countries safe haven, Trump apparently thought the best day to do that was on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Classy. …on Friday, Trump signed an executive order freezing refugee applications from seven Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East and Africa, including Syria. The “including Syria” part is important, because now Trump is giving priority to Christian refugees in a situation where any priority at all now ranks as preferential treatment: President Donald... Read more

Hey everybody. 🙂 It’s been a while. That’s for a number of reasons, part of which was waiting on the new artwork for the blog. Bask in vivid cheer of all those bright colors. So let’s face it, political discourse has become toxic. Not everybody is guilty of this, but on the whole that’s been the trend for a while now. It used to be that if you were passionate about a atheism or social justice and wanted to help,... Read more

This weekend I got to sing a duet with the insanely talented Stephanie Beinhorn and man, it lit a fire under me. I’ve decided to really apply myself and to get my voice back into real shape. Here are a couple clips of Steph and I rehearsing in my office the night before: I was grotesquely outclassed and it was awesome! So, aside from running my daily scales and what not I need to go back to basic care for my... Read more
